Conference on “Science, technology and innovation - a breakthrough driving force for sustainable development of the marine economy in An Giang province”

Conference attendees include: (1) Mr. Le Trung Ho, Member of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee and Vice Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee; (2) Mr. Vo Minh Trung, Director of the Department of Science and Technology; (3) Representatives of the leadership from: the Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission, the Provincial People’s Committee Office, and Science, Education, Culture and Social Affairs Division; (4) Mr. Phan Van Kien, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology. The workshop was also attended by: (5) Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism; (6) Departments, agencies, and People’s Committees of communes, wards, and special zones with sea within An Giang Province; (7) Departments of Science and Technology from provinces and cities with sea; (8) Experts and scientists from within and outside the province.

Mr. Le Trung Ho, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee, delivered the opening remarks at the workshop.

The conference took place with 23 in-depth presentations from speakers, scientists and managers.  At the conference, participants focused on listening and directly discussing 04 key reports revolving around solutions for applying high technology and digital transformation to optimize the marine economic potential of An Giang province in the new development context, specifically:

- Presentation 1: “The Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation in Developing An Giang Province's Maritime Economy” – Mr. Phan Van Kien, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and presented. The presentation orients the macro policy framework, emphasizing the core role of science and technology in comprehensive restructuring of the local marine economy.

- Presentation 2: “Science, technology and innovation in research and development of pharmaceuticals from marine and island medicinal resources in An Giang province" - Associate Professor, PhD. Le Van Minh presented. The presentation opens up new directions in in-depth scientific research, conservation and sustainable exploitation of rich medicinal treasures in the island areas of the province.

- Presentation 3: “Unlocking the Potential of Marine Bioactive Compounds: Opportunities to Enhance Ecosystem Value for the Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Industries” – Expert come from the Institute of Chemistry, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology presented. The presentation provides high-tech arguments for extracting high-value bioactive compounds and connecting the national pharmaceutical - cosmetic industry supply chain.

- Presentation 4: “Digital Technology for Sustainable Management and Development of Aquaculture Combined with Experiential Tourism in An Giang Province” – Dr. Phan Manh Hung presented. The presentation roposed solutions for applying digital transformation, IoT to modernize the aquaculture industry associated with the eco-tourism economic model to experience the new trend.

After the presentation of key presentations, the conference conducted a live discussion program to discuss in-depth the coordination mechanism and realize scientific and technological solutions into local practice. Discussion session by Mr. Vo Minh Trung, Director of the Department of Science and Technology chaired, with the participation of experts and speakers to present presentations.

Delegates focused on discussing the following core contents: (i) Addressing technological bottlenecks: Assessing the current situation and identifying solutions to overcome difficulties in technology transfer from research institutes and universities to businesses and fishermen in marine economic zones; (ii) Proposing special mechanisms: Recommendations for preferential policies to attract private investment into the marine medicinal plant industry and high-tech aquaculture; (iii) Building a collaborative network: Agreeing on a plan to establish a scientific information network connecting An Giang Province with central research institutes, ensuring long-term support for the local marine economy.

The discussion took place in a lively and frank atmosphere, recording many sharp criticisms and practical suggestions from department, sector and local representatives.

In addition, the seminar featured exhibition booths showcasing exemplary science and technology products. The exhibition area attracted significant attention by showcasing product lines utilizing deep-processing technologies based on local resources, such as banana-based products, health-promoting products made from turmeric, premium bio-liquors, and various other supporting technical research outcomes. This serves as practical evidence of the potential for commercializing research projects within the local economic value chain.

Closing remarks of the conference, Mr. Vo Minh Trung, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to thank the attention and direction of the Provincial People's Committee Leaders; the companionship of experts, scientists and representatives of departments, branches, branches and localities. Contributed opinions and proposed solutions at the Workshop and Discussion sessions will be fully synthesized by the Organizing Committee to develop an advisory report to submit to the Provincial People's Committee for consideration and promulgation of breakthrough policies for marine economic development in the coming time./.
